HIV in MSM continue to rise

HIV in MSM

Gay & bisexual men are the most affected group by HIV in Asia. In Hong Kong, HIV infection among MSM has stayed high since 2004 but the number decreased in recent years when compared to the peak in 2015. A concentrated epidemic among vulnerable groups, such as young MSM, warrants our sustained attention. 209 MSM infections were reported in 2023.

In 2023, they accounted for 52.6% of all new infections and 64.1% of new infections among males. Up till now, we are still facing a worrying epidemic situation among the MSM community.

In 2023:

  • One in every 6,986 new blood donors were tested HIV positive.
  • One in every 10,286 pregnant women attending public antenatal services was tested HIV positive.
  • One in every 377 attendees in STI clinics was tested HIV positive.
  • One in every 94 users in methadone clinics was tested HIV positive.
