Keeping pets
Keeping pets is emotionally rewarding and most people with HIV can and should keep their pets. However, some animals may carry infections that can be harmful to you so it's best to know the risks and precautions before you decide to own a pet. The followings should always be kept in mind by every pet owner:
- Wash your hands after playing with or caring for them.
- Keep your pets clean, wear gloves to clean up your pet's stool.
- Ask someone who is not infected with HIV and is not pregnant to change your cat's litter box daily. If you must clean the box yourself, wear gloves and immediately wash your hands well with soap and water right afterwards.
- Have your pet's nails clipped so it can't scratch you.
- De-worm your pets and keep the vaccination schedule.
- Don't let your pet eat raw food or get into garbage.
- Don't handle animals with diarrhoea, which is often a sign of sickness. Seek veterinary attention where necessary.
- Don't let your pet lick your mouth or any open cuts or wounds you may have.
- Don't touch stray animals, sick animals, or bring home any pet younger than 6 months.
- Avoid reptiles, exotic pets and wild animals.
